Located in the middle of ‘Camp de Tarragona’, the back-country of Tarragona, La Montoliva is the name of the farm land and the manor house that record the long agricultural tradition of the Magrinyà family.
Rooted in this area, they have been working for centuries on the flat and fertile lands surrounding the manor house.
But roots that last also mean ability to change. So, the current generations of La Montoliva, all with agronomy studies, have been introducing new crops and new management systems.

History of La Montoliva
Diversifying crops is the key to strengthening the viability of the family business and being able to live a farmer's life with dignity.
"The plagues can be controlled in a more natural way, without aggressive treatments. The soil is wise and can defend itself," explains Marià, representative of the young generation of La Montoliva.
They have also planted almond and apricot trees, while keeping the centennial olive trees.
100% organic crops
The recent history of La Montoliva recounts the passage from a monoculture of peach trees in integrated farming for wholesale to a diverse agricultural landscape where legumes, cereals and fruit are found - all in organic production. Diversifying crops is the key to strengthening the viability of the family business and being able to live a farmer's life with dignity.
More than 10 years ago, the first step was to introduce organic farming. Reducing chemicals balances the ecosystem. "The plagues can be controlled in a more natural way, without aggressive treatments. The soil is wise and can defend itself," explains Marià, representative of the young generation of La Montoliva.
At the same time, he and his father Josep Maria have been sowing different cereals, such as spelt, ‘xeixa’ (old native wheat) or oatmeal, and lately mustard, intercalating them with legumes such as chickpeas or lentils. They have also planted almond and apricot trees, while keeping the centennial olive trees.
100% organic crops
The result is a landscape fully integrated in the environment where several crops are combined with specific particularities: they are very adapted to the territory, do not depend much on water and have complementary temporalities to give work throughout the year.
"The goal is to get a good and accessible product for many people. I have always wanted to make everyday food such as legumes or cereals and not go looking for sophistication or things that ordinary people could not afford.”
